A long awaited interview with the very talented self-taught Mexican artist Édgar MT.
Where were you born and where do you live now?
I was born in Guadalajara, Mexico. I live on the outskirts of the same city, in an almost rural neighbourhood. I don't like to waste time going from one place to another, but I appreciate silence and clean air, or cleaner than there is here anyway!
How long have you been illustrating for?
I'm not sure, probably since I was 15 or 16, when I decided to load meaning or feelings into my drawings.
How would you describe your work?
Usually it's a self-biographical... I like to ridicule things that bother me and over exaggerate those I like. The characters I draw usually share my own features.
What inspires you?
I like to read, even more when it's about a loose narrative. I enjoy writers that use clever quotes and play on words. Photography inspires me too -- it makes me wonder about the instant when the photo has been shot. Even music, mostly when I'm able to sing along, it's so much funnier then.
What's it like living and working in México?
It can be difficult because there's often a lack of options, but when you realise that nothing will come along on its own, you learn that the best way is to make your own stuff... especially now that we have the worst president in our history. But when people are good in what they do, it shows; and from hard work, good opportunities will follow.
Describe a typical day.
I wake up early to go to work at a design and advertising agency. In the afternoon I go to college, where I study Graphic design. Later I work out a little and at night I start to draw. I have a very tight agenda, so I love when I get a free day at school, and weekends when I skip work and I can give my drawings a little more time!
Who would you love to work with?
Jamie Lidell, I want to make an album cover, or sing a song with him!
Any exciting current projects?
I've been working on a zine of stories written and illustrated by myself. This project excites me but also makes me nervous. I'm working on a series of illustrations for a line of t-shirts too.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years time?
Living in the same city, but traveling a lot. Dedicating more time to my projects and doing things that I thought I couldn't do 10 years ago.
What's your favourite kind of music? I listen to a lot of kinds of music. Lately I'm listening to funk, soul, folk, hip hop, IDM: Jamie Lidell, Sade, Ital Tek, Lunice, Alela Diane, Le parody, Angel Olsen, Atom tm... yep, a lot!
The last great book I read was… “¿Te veré en el desayuno?” of Guillermo Fadanelli, and “Sólo cuento #3” which is a great collection of hispanic short stories edited by UNAM -- you should read them!
If I could live anywhere it would be… maybe in Rome, Florianópolis or in a pretty Australian city.
If I wasn't doing this I'd be… sometimes I think I am a being full of the cruelest of the bitterness -- so I´d be a being full of the cruelest of the bitterness without relief, or maybe a musician.
After a long hard days work I like to unwind by… reading and searching for new music to listen to, drinking coffee or a cheap beer.
