Our first Artist Submission of 2015 is kicking off in style with the very talented Marseille based artist & illustrator Nicolas Pegon.
'Meticulous, asbtract and figurative at once', Pegon combines various techniques and textured layers to create incredibly detailed and provocative mixed media works.
With his extremely detailed and carefully placed line work, one is reminded of the themes and styles of Basquiat. Both artists create raw and confronting imagery through their exploration of the human body, anatomy & sexual worlds - a great combination that always makes for interesting work!
Definitely one artist to watch in 2015.
When did you first get into illustration?
As far as I can remember I have always been passionate about drawing. When I was younger, it was one of my favourite things to do.
When I was roughly 12 years I started selling erotic drawings to my friends to make some money.
Later on I went to the School of Fine Arts in Lyon but drawing became my main for the following two years.
What are some of your major influences?
It's not easy to say because everything I see every day influences my work!
In terms of classical influences, my favourites are Basquiat of course, Hans Bellmer, Kandinsky and Miro.
As for contemporary artists, I love the work of Tim Furey, Laurent Impeduglia, Boris Pramatarov, Mary Boralevi, Jonas Delaborde, Bryan Cunningham, the Clayton Brothers and Marko Velk.
Cinema & film also occupies a very important place in my work, especially films. I love the work of directors Dario Argento, David Cronenberg, David Lynch (I love Twin Peaks), Takashi Miike and Rob Zombie (House of 1000 corpses).
Have those influences changed over time?
My influences evolve all the time. Thanks to the internet I've discovered a whole range of great new artists, movies and music. The most difficult thing to do is to digest all these works and evolve them into my own work!
If you could collaborate with any artist right now, who would it be?
Oh yes, I'd love to work with Marko Velk! He has exceptional technique with charcoal and has mastered the art of composition. He is an artist that I've admire for many years.
After a long days work, I like to unwind by… Right now I work at home, alternating between drawing and taking care of my daughter (she is 7 months old). So at the end of the day when my wife returns to the house, I relax by working alone and quietly!
Right now I’m listening to… A Tribe Called Quest - Midnight Marauders. For me it's the best Hip Hop album ever.
The last great book I read was… I don't read much at the moment, because I don't take the time. But I regularly read Alice in Wonderland to my daughter!
My top three films are… Hard. It depends on the moment. Here's my selection at the moment:
Phantom of the Paradise - Brian de Palma
SUSPIRIA - Dario Argento
Gozu - Takashi Miike
If I wasn’t doing this I’d be… sad, depressed, useless, nothing!
